Trimontium
This site dating from the period
of Agricola in the 1st Century AD. was known
as the place of the three peaks, we know this
from the writings of Potolmy. It was the
headquarters of the Roman Army in the North,
the roman road coming up from Corebridge.
This site was the centre for
a number of networks, and from here the Romans
calculated the distances from Trimontium.
The Roman engineers built the
fort on a mound that overlooked the River
Tweed making it a very important camp.
For visitors to the site today
a number of excellent out guides have been
erected to act as information points to those
who wish to walk in the footsteps of the Romans,
but sadly not much can be observed today which
lies above the ground.
However, in Melrose the visitor
can enjoy viewing a display of what life would
have been like within the fort.
